he 20th Annual VPPA Conference was held at the Crowne Plaza in Richmond on May 23rd through the 25th. The conference was attended by 130 community corrections professionals from around the state. This is the largest number of attendees, for a non-beach conference, since the VPPA started having conferences 20 years ago.
The training covered a variety of topics pertinent to issues facing our profession and included nationally known experts in correctional and law enforcement theories and practices. Attendees were given credit for 12.5 hours of training.
The conference also gave people an opportunity to socialize and mingle and have some fun with colleagues in a non-work setting. The social was held at the Richbrau Brewery/Grill and a local band, The 100th Monkey, provided a wide spectrum of musical entertainment.
The Awards Luncheon was a little disappointing due to poor planning on the part of the hotel staff. Attendees, however, maintained good spirits and made the best of the situation. Later the hotel gave the Association a financial consideration for the lapses in service and equipment at the luncheon. The VPPA Board worked very hard planning this event and apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the luncheon problems.
John Smith, Vice President of VPPA, is to be commended for his efforts in planning this conference and we look forward to hosting our next conference in 2007 in the western part of the Commonwealth.
